The EV charging industry has a measurement problem. We count connectors. Drivers experience reliability. Those are not the same thing.
A country can announce thousands of charging points. An operator can deploy hundreds of chargers. A property owner can install high-power equipment in a visible location. Yet the driver may still ask the same question: can I charge here, now, without uncertainty?
That gap matters because an installed connector is not automatically usable charging capacity.
What makes a charging session possible
For a charging session to happen, several systems have to work at the same time:
- The vehicle and connector must be compatible.
- The charger must be online and available.
- The site must have sufficient power at the time it is needed.
- Access and payment must work in a way the user can understand.
- The location must fit the driver’s journey or dwell time.
- When something fails, someone must be able to diagnose and restore service.
If any one of these conditions breaks, the physical charger still exists. But the infrastructure, from the driver’s perspective, has failed.
Why connector count can be misleading
This is why “chargers installed” can be a misleading measure of market readiness. It tells us something about capital deployment. It tells us much less about charging confidence.
Charging confidence is what changes behaviour. A fleet manager will not electrify more vehicles simply because a charger appears on a map. They will do it when charging is predictable enough to protect operations. A commercial property will not see charging as an amenity simply because it has hardware in the car park. It becomes an amenity when visitors can use it without needing technical support.
A city does not create a functional public network merely by adding locations. It creates one when drivers can depend on those locations across different vehicles, times of day and service conditions.
Where reliability is actually built
The difficult work often sits between the charger and the user: interoperability, load management, remote diagnostics, spare-parts availability, site design, payment reliability, installer capability and clear responsibility when service fails.
These are sometimes treated as secondary details after the equipment decision. In reality, they determine whether equipment becomes infrastructure.
What this changes for EV charging buyers
For buyers sourcing EV charging equipment, this changes what should be evaluated before an order is placed. The charger itself matters, but so do interoperability, load management, remote support, spare-parts access and the practical capability of the local installation and service chain.
A sourcing decision should help create reliable charging sessions, not simply add more hardware to a market. That requires product requirements, software expectations, site conditions and support responsibilities to be discussed together, before a catalogue specification becomes a purchase commitment.
From assets to trust
Perhaps the industry needs a more demanding measure of progress. Not: “How many connectors have we installed?” But: “How many reliable charging sessions can the network deliver when people need them?”
The first question measures assets. The second measures trust. And trust may be the most important infrastructure EV charging still needs to build.
